2026 Senior Honors Convocation Highlights Student Excellence

Southern Connecticut State University honored its highest-achieving students during the 2026 Senior Honors Convocation, held on Sunday, April 26 at the John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts.

The annual celebration recognized graduating seniors for exceptional academic achievement, leadership, research, and service across all academic colleges and disciplines. From departmental awards and Honors College distinctions to the university’s most prestigious accolades, the ceremony showcased the depth and diversity of student success at Southern.

Presided over by Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Julia Irwin, the convocation brought together faculty, staff, families, and peers to celebrate a defining milestone in the academic journey of the Class of 2026. In her remarks, Irwin emphasized the significance of the moment and the collective impact of the students being honored.

“Today’s celebration is one of the highlights of the year — a time when we recognize individuals who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and service,” she said. “Your achievements reflect not only your dedication, but the strength of our entire Southern community.”

Interim President Sandra Bulmer also offered greetings, recognizing the honorees as future leaders and changemakers whose impact will extend far beyond campus.

More than 200 students were recognized across disciplines, with awards presented by deans and university leadership representing the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, College of Education, and College of Health and Human Services

The program also highlighted the work of the Honors College, where students completed advanced research, theses, and community-based projects spanning topics from public health and environmental sustainability to psychology, business, and the humanities.

Among the ceremony’s highest honors, the Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award was presented to four exceptional seniors: Stephanie Allis, Hannah Ashiru, Paul Concordia, and Heather Rae Gaydowen. Selected for their academic excellence, leadership, and service, each recipient exemplifies the mission and values of Southern.

The convocation also featured a student address by Gaydowen, a psychology major and Honors College scholar, whose academic achievements and leadership on campus reflect the spirit of the Class of 2026.

Senior Honors Convocation remains one of Southern’s most meaningful traditions — a moment to recognize excellence and look ahead to the impact these graduates will make in their communities and careers.
