“A Skin of Veils” Brings a Powerful Call to Action

A Skin of Veils took the stage at Southern Connecticut State University’s John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts in November, challenging audiences to confront occupation, colonialism, and sexual violence as tools of war. Written by Professor of Theatre Emma Joy Hill and directed by Southern alumna Gracy Brown, ’98, the three-night production blended myth, metaphor, and contemporary global realities into a searing theatrical experience.

SCSU students Khabyra Alston Kennie (Miriam) and Nexxus Ortiz (Neighbor) delivered gripping performances as young women coming of age amid violence and fear. Their portrayals highlighted both the personal cost of conflict and the resilience required to survive it.

Hill has described the play as both a reflection and a provocation, urging audiences to move beyond observation and toward action. Brown echoed that intention, emphasizing the responsibility artists have to challenge silence and complacency.
