Jeffrey R. Newton, M.S. ’96, a veteran educator and superintendent of East Lyme Public Schools, has been named the 2026 Connecticut Superintendent of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS). The honor was formally announced at the annual CABE/CAPSS Convention in Groton.
With more than two decades of service in Connecticut schools, Newton has been recognized for his collaborative leadership style, student-centered focus, and commitment to district-wide transparency and continuous improvement. His career began as a special education teacher in Norwich and included leadership roles in Westbrook, Montville, and Hebron before assuming his current post in East Lyme.
Newton earned his Master of Science in Special Education in 1996.
According to CAPSS, Newton is widely respected for “fostering a positive district climate, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring collaboration among staff, students, and families.”
His academic credentials also include a superintendent certificate from the University of Connecticut’s Executive Leadership Program and a Sixth-Year Certificate in Educational Administration from Sacred Heart University.
Newton’s recognitions include the Dean’s Leadership Award in Education from Sacred Heart, the Outstanding First-Year Principal Award, and statewide honors for creating exemplary school climates.
