C.J. Moran Named Head Coach of Southern Swimming and Diving

Southern alumnus and longtime coach will lead the university’s storied men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Southern Connecticut State University has named alumnus C.J. Moran, ’99, head coach of its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs, Director of Athletics Terrance Jones announced Sept. 3.

Moran succeeds the late Tim Quill, who led the programs for 27 seasons and helped establish Southern as the most decorated swimming and diving program in Northeast-10 Conference history.

“There is no one more prepared, or more deserving, to lead our swimming and diving family forward than C.J. Moran,” Jones said. “C.J. is an Owl through and through – as a student-athlete, as an alumnus, and as a coach. He learned under Coach Quill, he helped build this dynasty, and he embodies the values of excellence, compassion, and belonging that define Southern.”

A four-year letterwinner for the Owls from 1995 to 1999, Moran later returned to Southern as an assistant coach and has helped coach numerous NE10 champions, All-Americans and NCAA qualifiers. He earned his bachelor’s degree in social work from Southern.

“I am extremely honored to be chosen as the next head coach of the Southern Swimming and Diving Program,” Moran said. “Words cannot even describe how thankful I am for the overwhelming support I have received from my family, friends, SCSU’s athletic administration, our current swimmers and divers, and my SCSU Swimming and Diving Alumni family throughout this process.”

Moran takes over a program with 35 combined NE10 championships — 17 men’s and 18 women’s — and will lead the Owls into the 2026-27 season.
