Coach Tom Loth Takes Leadership Lessons “Beyond the Playbook”

Southern Connecticut State University Head Football Coach Joe Loth recently took his leadership experience from the sideline to the boardroom as a featured speaker at the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural “Beyond the Playbook: Sports Business & Leadership” event.

Held August 27 at Hotel Marcel in New Haven, the event featured Loth alongside Tom Moore, general manager of UConn men’s basketball, for a conversation exploring the connections between success in athletics and effective leadership in the workplace.

Designed to bring some of the region’s accomplished sports leaders together with the business community, “Beyond the Playbook” focused on leadership lessons, behind-the-scenes experiences and insights from careers in competitive athletics that can be applied to organizations and teams beyond sports.

For Loth, the conversation offered an opportunity to draw from more than three decades in collegiate athletics and his experience leading and developing student-athletes. Loth became head coach of the Southern Owls football program in 2025.

Prior to that, Loth served 12 seasons as head coach at Western Connecticut State University and previously held head coaching roles at Otterbein College and Kean University, along with assistant coaching positions at programs including the University of Rhode Island and Southern Methodist University.

The event also highlighted Southern’s connection to the Greater New Haven community, bringing the university’s perspective on coaching, team-building, and leadership into conversation with business and community leaders from across the region.
