This fall, Southern Connecticut State University welcomed a rare and inspiring trio to campus: triplets Joseph, Mason, and Tyler Izquierdo of Derby, Conn., who are all beginning their undergraduate studies at Southern — each charting a unique academic path.
The brothers, 2025 graduates of Derby High School, have spent their entire academic lives side by side — from preschool through high school — and now through their first year as Owls.
- Joseph is pursuing a degree in nursing, with hopes of becoming a pediatric emergency department nurse. A certified EMT, he currently volunteers for Seymour and Storm Ambulance and is excited to continue his healthcare journey at Southern, where he has also joined the university choir.
- Tyler is majoring in physical education and health and plans to become a teacher. A proud member of Derby High School’s band and cross-country teams, he’s looking forward to new opportunities and community at Southern.
- Mason is studying communication and media, with aspirations of becoming a news camera operator. Southern’s accessible support services and strong media program made it the perfect fit.
All three brothers chose Southern not only for its academic programs but also for its affordability and welcoming environment, and the proximity to home allows them to commute from Derby.
“It’s just a great opportunity,” said Tyler. “The staff and people seem really upbeat, and there’s a lot I want to explore.”
Principal Jennifer Olson of Derby High School, who has known the brothers since kindergarten, shared her pride: “Joseph, Mason, and Tyler are bright, talented, creative, and hard-working. I’m so proud that they’re heading to Southern Connecticut State University, and I have no doubt they’ll continue to make our Derby community proud.”
The triplets officially began classes on August 26 as part of the class of 2029.
