Crescent magazine, a student publication at Southern, earned seven awards during the recent Connecticut College Contest — sponsored by the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
The student journalists were judged for their work during the 2020-21 academic year.
Muhaymina Plair swept the Non-Page 1 Layout Category, winning a first, second and third place award. Her first place award was for “Yellow sun at high noon.”
Jason Edwards also took home a first place award for his work, “Frontline Owls.”
Jessica Guerrucci, Sarah Shelton and Liz Getts also were selected for awards.
“Crescent magazine has proven, in its short existence at Southern, to be an accomplished publication, winning numerous state, regional and national recognition. The Journalism Department faculty is very proud of the hard work of these students telling the stories of Southern students,” said Cindy Simoneau, chair of the Journalism Department. Simoneau and Jodie Gil, associate professor of journalism, serve as faculty advisors of the magazine.
“The difficulties of covering campus during a pandemic, when most students were not on campus, was particularly daunting,” Simoneau said. “These writers and editors went above and beyond to accomplish outstanding examples of campus journalism.”
