Helping Runners Make Sense of Wearable Technology

Dr. Robert Gregory, professor in Southern Connecticut State University’s Department of Health and Movement Sciences, recently shared his expertise with The New York Times’ Wirecutter for its updated guide to the best GPS running watches.

The guide examines how GPS watches can help runners track distance, pace, heart rate, training trends, and other performance metrics. Gregory encouraged runners to focus on technology that supports their individual needs rather than becoming overwhelmed by the growing amount of data available through wearable devices.

“Only buy the watch to give you the features you need,” Gregory told Wirecutter, cautioning that otherwise users can find themselves facing a “data tsunami.”

Gregory’s perspective draws on his work at Southern, where he serves as director of the Connecticut Running Injury Clinic and teaches in areas including biomechanics, sport science and performance technology, and strength and conditioning. His research also explores running mechanics and human performance, bringing an applied perspective to how athletes can use technology and performance data effectively.
