Long Wharf Theatre is bringing its acclaimed production of English to Southern Connecticut State University, where the Pulitzer Prize–winning play is running through Feb. 1.
Written by Sanaz Toossi, English follows four students in Iran preparing to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), exploring how language shapes identity, power, and belonging. Set entirely within a classroom, the play examines what is gained—and what can be lost—when communication becomes a barrier to self-expression.
In a recent review, the New Haven Independent praised the production’s ensemble cast and direction, highlighting the nuanced performances and the play’s thoughtful examination of language and cultural identity. The production previously ran at Hartford TheaterWorks before arriving at Southern as part of Long Wharf Theatre’s continued partnership with the university.
The staging at Southern reflects a long-standing collaboration between the two institutions, offering students, faculty, and the greater New Haven community access to professional theatre while expanding experiential learning and engagement in the arts.
Performances of English are being held on Southern’s campus through Feb. 1. Tickets and additional information are available through Long Wharf Theatre.
