Economics Professor Offers Holiday Shopping Advice on WTNH

As the holiday season kicks into high gear, shoppers across the country are preparing for what’s expected to be a record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend. Nearly 187 million Americans plan to shop between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation.

Amid the excitement—and potential spending overload—Dr. James Thorson, economics professor from the School of Business, joined WTNH News 8 to offer timely advice for consumers navigating the holiday deals.

“Manage your budget, figure out how much you have to spend, and make sure you stay within it—otherwise, it’s going to cause stress down the road,” Thorson said.

He also warned shoppers to be cautious of offers that appear too good to be true, especially online, where scams tend to increase during peak shopping seasons.

With electronics and clothing topping gift lists, Thorson noted that tariffs may push prices higher this year, urging consumers to compare prices and shop around before committing.

Black Friday remains the most popular shopping day, with 130 million expected to shop, followed by 74 million on Cyber Monday.
