Rebecca Harvey, professor in Southern Connecticut State University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program, recently joined Connecticut Public Radio’s talk show Where We Live to discuss parenting in anxious times. The episode, titled “Parental Burnout Is Real. Here Are Tips for Ways to Fight It,” aired September 30 on WNPR.
Harvey appeared alongside licensed clinical social worker Alexis Munson, her long-time friend and fellow therapist, to offer insights drawn from both their clinical practices and personal experiences as parents. The conversation, hosted by Catherine Shen, centered around the rising stress and uncertainty many parents face today—whether from societal pressures, political unrest, or digital overload—and offered strategies to manage emotional well-being.
“There’s just a real, elevated sense of ‘What is the future going to bring?’” Harvey shared. “That stress can isolate us—but when we name it and connect with others, it creates room for hope and healing.”
Harvey emphasized the importance of mindfulness, community, and self-compassion in parenting, while also discussing how professional and peer support can be crucial tools for reducing burnout.
