In a ceremony marked by warmth and anticipation, Chief Makiem Miller was officially sworn in as Southern’s fourth Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety on Friday, June 7, 2024.
The event, attended by Miller’s family, members of the University Police Department, and various guests, highlighted the vital role of campus safety and the leadership qualities Miller brings to his new position.
“I have my team. I have my command staff. I have my brother and sister officers,” said Miller. “I got to take care of them. They’re going to look at me for their guidance and to guide them in the vision that I have.”
Miller’s impressive credentials and extensive experience were highlighted during the ceremony. His previous appointments at Miami Dade and Belmont Abbey Colleges have given him a deep understanding of the unique dynamics of higher education settings.
Additionally, his decades-long tenure with the New Haven Police Department, where he served as a police officer, detective, lieutenant, and command-level district manager, has equipped him with valuable insights into community engagement and law enforcement.
In its four decades of existence, the Southern Police Department has had three directors of public safety: Chief Donald Hasbrook, Chief John Prokop, and Chief Joseph Dooley. Miller said he’s prepared to support the administration, assist his command staff and officers, and meet the needs of the community.
“In our new police chief, we have found not only someone with excellent credentials and experience but also a leader committed to fostering a culture of trust, respect, and community engagement,” said Interim President Dwayne Smith.
“If we have proper communication and we treat each other with dignity and respect, there are no problems that we can’t solve together because none of us can do it by ourselves,” said Miller.
