A Legacy in the Pool: Southern Honors Coach Tim Quill

Southern Connecticut State University honored the legacy of longtime swimming and diving coach Timothy P. Quill IV during Homecoming and Family Weekend with the dedication of the Timothy P. Quill IV Scoreboard at the Bruce Hutchinson Natatorium.

Family, friends, alumni, current and former student-athletes, coaches and members of the Southern community gathered Oct. 9 to celebrate Quill, who led Southern’s swimming and diving program for nearly three decades and built one of the most successful programs in university history.

During his 28-year career at Southern, Quill guided the Owls to 34 Northeast-10 Conference championships and mentored generations of student-athletes, leaving an impact that extended well beyond the pool.

“Tim will always be in our hearts, and now he will always have a place on the Southern campus,” Interim President Sandra Bulmer said during the ceremony.

Director of Athletics and Recreation Terrence Jones remembered Quill as a coach whose commitment to his student-athletes was always at the center of his work.

“At the end of the day, every swimmer and diver that was on his team knew that he loved them and that he cared for them,” Jones said. “He really poured into them to see them be good in the pool and in the community.”

Current Head Swimming and Diving Coach CJ Moran offered a unique perspective on Quill’s legacy, having first swum for him at Southern and later coached alongside him for 16 years.

“He was always challenging his student-athletes to be better, to be able to believe in themselves more than they probably believed in themselves,” Moran said.

Moran said that commitment to student-athletes remains a guiding principle for the program.

“The one thing that I will say about Tim is that, in his coaching career, he never did anything that he didn’t think was in the best interest of his student-athletes,” Moran said. “That’s something that I hope to carry on as I try to push forward here and help continue the legacy that he built here at Southern.”

Quill’s wife, Brenda, and children, Lily and Tim, joined Moran for the official unveiling of the scoreboard, which will serve as a permanent tribute to Quill’s contributions to Southern Athletics and the university community.

Southern and the Quill family have also established the Tim Quill Memorial Scholarship to support future generations of Southern student-athletes, raising more than $20,000 to date. Click here to make a gift.
