Southern Steps Up for Closer-to-Free Ride

Members of the Southern Connecticut State University community joined thousands of riders and volunteers for the 16th annual Closer to Free Ride on Sept. 19, supporting cancer care and research at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center.

Southern’s baseball team continued its longstanding involvement with the event, volunteering and riding alongside Interim President Sandra Bulmer and other members of the university community.

The annual ride holds special meaning for Southern, whose team has ridden in memory of founder Michelle Mann and longtime colleague Kathy Yalof. For the baseball program, the event has also carried personal connections to cancer over the years, reinforcing its commitment to giving back to the Greater New Haven community.

WTNH News 8 covered this year’s event, which brought cyclists together for routes ranging from 10 to 100 miles.
