The bright lights of Jeopardy! became a stage for Southern Connecticut State University alumna Lydia Sekscenski, ’25, as she brought her quick thinking and love of trivia to a national audience this week.
Sekscenski, who earned her bachelor’s degree in English, appeared on the long-running quiz show hosted by Ken Jennings during Tuesday night’s episode. A sales consultant from Wallingford, Conn., she competed against returning champion Jamie Ding, who entered the game on a 27-day winning streak.
To mark the moment, Southern hosted a campus watch party in Engleman Hall on April 21, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and alumni to cheer on one of their own.
Sekscenski’s appearance also continues a small but notable Southern tradition—Instruction Coordinator Wendy Hardenberg of Library Services previously represented the university on Jeopardy! in 2014.
Faculty who taught Sekscenski say her appearance comes as no surprise.
“She just had so many questions that helped other students see what is going on in the play,” said English Professor Mike Shea, who taught Sekscenski in a Hamlet course. “She was like a co-teacher—she was so good.”
Although the match-up was a tough one, viewers praised Sekscenski’s quick buzzer timing, competitive play, and memorable on-air presence. Fans following the episode online described the game as closer than the final scores suggested and applauded her for the way she kept pressure on the returning champion.
“To have everybody here to support me, it means everything to me,” Sekscenski said. “My phone is blowing up with family messages; everyone is so excited. It is overwhelming, but I couldn’t be more grateful.”
