Training the Next Generation of Drone Professionals

In designing a special program model aimed at out-of-school young adults, aged 18–24, Southern Connecticut State University’s Drone Academy marks a new chapter in a successful program that has already drawn first responders and public safety professionals from across Connecticut. In partnership with Career Resources, the Office of Workforce and Lifelong Learning (OWLL) launched this youth-focused cohort to expand access to one of the state’s fastest-growing technology fields.

The academy blended hands-on flight training with career coaching, giving participants a strong foundation in drone operation, safety, and data collection—along with the professional skills needed to navigate next-step employment and certification pathways. Students explored real-world uses of unmanned aerial systems and gained clarity on credentials and careers within the sector.

Amy Feest, senior director of OWLL, along with partners from Career Resources, joined WPLR’s “For the People” podcast to discuss the program model, what students experienced, and how Drone Academy is strengthening Connecticut’s emerging drone workforce pipeline.
