The Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) program at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) is honored to present a keynote lecture and book signing by acclaimed poet, editor, essayist, and translator Martín Espada at noon on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in the Adanti Student Center Theater. This highly anticipated event will highlight Espada’s contributions to Latino literature and his impact on contemporary poetry.
Martín Espada is a National Book Award-winning poet known for his powerful and socially conscious writing. His upcoming book, Jailbreak of Sparrows, will be released by Knopf in April 2025. His writing reflects themes of identity, language, cultural pride, and social justice, often engaging with the stories of immigrants, exiles, refugees, and their descendants.
This event builds on previous discussions led by distinguished guest speakers sponsored by the LACS program, including Sonia Nazario (2020), Seth Michelson (2021), Carl Lindskoog (2022), Juan González (2023), and Jenny Torres Sanchez (2024).
