Southern’s 10th Annual Day of Caring: A Decade of Impact

On April 3, the Southern community will rally together once again for a 24-hour celebration of generosity, unity and Owl pride – marking the university’s 10th annual Day of Caring.

What began in 2015 as “The Chambrello Challenge” and later evolved into Giving Day, has grown into a powerful movement that embodies Southern’s mission — ensuring students have the essential resources they need to succeed.

Nearly a decade ago, Michael Chambrello, ’79, helped launch The Chambrello Challenge, sparking a wave of generosity that has since raised $3.7 million to support students in need. But for Chambrello, the event was always about more than just numbers — it’s about giving back to the place that changed his life.

As a first-generation student, Chambrello knew that higher education could open doors — but only if he could afford to walk through them. At Southern, he found mentors who believed in him, experiences that shaped him, and a foundation that led to success.

“Southern gave me more than an education — it gave me opportunity, confidence, and a future. Giving back is my way of ensuring that more students have the same chance to discover their potential,” said Chambrello.

Now, that legacy has evolved into a powerful force for good, showcasing both the generosity and spirit of the Southern community.

“Every year, Day of Caring brings out the best of the Southern community,” said Dwayne Smith, interim president of Southern Connecticut State University. “Through the many gifts we receive, no matter their size, we show our scholars that they are seen, supported, and valued. When we all give what we can, we create opportunities that will shape lives for years to come.”

Last year, the Southern community raised well over $900,000, and aims to soar even higher in 2025.

Throughout the day, real-time updates will track contributions, donor challenges, and matching funds, said Kristen Welton, associate director of annual giving.

“Every gift — large or small — will directly benefit undergraduate, graduate, and online students, ensuring Southern continues to provide transformational experiences inside and outside the classroom.”

As Southern kicks off another Day of Caring, every act of generosity makes a real difference in shaping opportunities for our students. Join Southern’s caring community at SouthernCT.edu/DayofCaring.
