Office of Sustainability Joins Newhallville Fresh Starts in Innovative Food Recovery Initiative

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Marcus Harvin, the visionary founder of Newhallville Fresh Starts, is teaming up with Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) to launch a transformative food recovery initiative. Harvin’s initial plans to establish a community kitchen at New Haven’s Pitts Chapel, providing evening meals for those in need, took an unexpected turn when Derek Faulkner, a University Assistant from SCSU’s Office of Sustainability, reached out to offer support.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in the fight against food waste and hunger, as SCSU’s food recovery program, led by student intern Chris Kowalski, joins forces with Newhallville Fresh Starts. Together, they are set to make a meaningful impact on the community by salvaging prepared and leftover foods from SCSU’s dining halls, ensuring these meals reach those who need them the most.
