Feeding Gratitude: SCSU Student’s National Win Benefits Food Pantry

Anthony Solberg, ’28, was recently named one of ten winners in Sodexo’s “Grateful Plateful Sweepstakes,” part of its fall resident dining promotion series. This national sweepstakes gave students across the U.S. the chance to direct a $1,250 charitable donation to a food-related charity of their choice. Solberg chose the SCSU Food Pantry as his beneficiary, supporting a vital resource for his campus community.

In addition to the charitable donation, Solberg will receive a $575 Visa gift card to host a themed campus cookout, promoting “gratitude” and “grati-food” with fellow students.

“As a first-year student, I’ve been overwhelmed by the warmth and support of the SCSU community,” said Solberg. “Their generosity has inspired me to give back, and I’m proud to support the food pantry to help others feel the same sense of belonging and care that I’ve experienced here.”

To commemorate this occasion, Solberg presented a ceremonial check to the SCSU Food Pantry on Dec. 5. The event included Sodexo leadership, campus partners, food pantry representatives, and students.

“The fact that Sodexo not only offers this nationally but also customizes it for our campus is incredibly meaningful, and gives us yet another valuable opportunity to foster connection and engagement, which is core to our mission,” said Dr. Tracy Tyree, vice president for Student Affairs.

“This semester, thousands of students at hundreds of campuses across the country entered to win one of ten $575 gift cards as well as a $1,250 donation made in their name to a food related charity of their choice,” said Jenn Herndon, District Manager for Sodexo. “Southern Dining is excited to celebrate Anthony Solberg who has selected the SCSU Campus Food Pantry as the recipient of his $1,250 donation.  These are moments that remind us how valuable our campus partnerships are and how programs we promote can directly give back to the universities we serve.”

Since its opening in late 2020, the SCSU Food Pantry has provided essential support to thousands of Southern students. Conveniently located at the rear of the Wintergreen Building, the pantry operates on the following schedule:

  • Mondays: Closed
  • Tuesdays: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Wednesdays: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Thursdays: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Fridays: Closed

Southern’s food pantry works diligently to stock its shelves with food, ensuring students have access to essential resources to meet their basic needs. To sustain this vital service throughout the year, funding is crucial. Donors can support the food pantry by contributing to the Support Our Students (SOS) Fund.
