Alumna Named New Haven Public Schools Teacher of the Year

Julia Miller, SYC ‘23, a dedicated social studies teacher at Metropolitan Business Academy, has been named the 2024 New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) Teacher of the Year.

With 18 years of teaching experience and a deep commitment to her students, Miller’s journey in education has been driven by a passion for civic engagement, community empowerment, and restorative justice.

Having earned her Sixth Year Certificate in Educational Leadership from Southern Connecticut State University in 2023, Miller leads initiatives that uplift students and future educators. Through her course, Youth Justice in Practice, and programs like Educators Rising, she instills a sense of purpose and agency in her students, encouraging them to become active members of society.

“I want my students to feel empowered to make change,” Miller says, a message that resonates deeply in her classroom and beyond. Miller’s vision for culturally relevant, trauma-informed education, combined with her leadership in the NHPS, has earned her widespread recognition, solidifying her as a champion for educational equity and student success.

Miller also was part of a small group of curriculum writers who crafted an Early College Experience course entitled Seminar in Education through a collaboration with Southern Connecticut State University.
