Professor Emeritus Harvey Feinberg, an Expert on South Africa, Publishes New Article in Leading Journal

Harvey M. Feinberg, professor emeritus of history, has published an article, “‘A small measure of fairness’: Black South Africans and the Courts, 1919–1938,” in the Journal of Southern African Studies. Feinberg, who served on the Southern faculty from 1969-2006, refers to the Journal of Southern African Studies, which is published in England, as “the best journal for articles about South Africa.”

In addition to his role as SCSU professor emeritus of history, Feinberg is former research collaborator at the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. His early research interests focused on eighteenth-century Ghana, and in 1989 he published Africans and Europeans in West Africa: Elminans and Dutchmen on the Gold Coast during the Eighteenth Century.

In the mid-1980s, he turned his attention to early twentieth-century South Africa, and he has published a number of articles on that topic in all of the leading African studies journals. In 2015, he published Our Land, Our Life, Our Future: Black South African Challenges to Territorial Segregation, 1913-1948, which evaluates a topic central to the past century of South African history — the 1913 Natives Land Act and its consequences.
