Southern Hosts Connecticut’s First College Symposium on Gambling Harm

Southern Connecticut State University recently hosted Connecticut’s first-ever College Symposium on Gambling Harm, drawing experts, counselors, and prevention professionals to address the growing impact of online gambling on college campuses.

Held on June 11, the event was made possible through the leadership of Dr. Sarah Keiser, coordinator of Addiction and Recovery Services within SCSU’s Counseling Services. A licensed drug and alcohol counselor with over two decades of experience, Keiser was instrumental in organizing the symposium in collaboration with the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling.

Keynote speaker Dr. Michelle Malkin, director of the Gambling Research & Policy Initiative at East Carolina University, presented new screening tools and educational models tailored for young adults. Speakers, including Mallory Schultz of the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling and Liz Thielen of Epic Global Solutions, emphasized the vulnerability of student populations, especially athletes, and the need for comprehensive outreach.

Resources such as Connecticut’s Bettor Choice treatment program and a 24/7 gambling helpline were promoted throughout the event. For more information or help, visit ccpg.org/chat or call 1-888-789-7777.
