Economic Professor Talks Tariffs

Dr. James Thorson

As Wall Street reacts to the latest round of tariffs announced by President Donald Trump, Economics Professor James Thorson is offering reassurance amid financial uncertainty.

Appearing on FOX61’s evening segment on April 8, Thorson addressed growing public anxiety about retirement accounts as the Dow Jones dropped more than 2,200 points in a single day.

“A young person, for example, [with] many years to retirement — I would keep stocks in my 401(k),” said Thorson. “That’s the big risk you have in the long run, inflation risk, and stocks are really one of our best hedges against inflation.”

Thorson’s teaching spans real estate and urban economics, corporate finance, and statistics for business and economics. His research focuses on land use regulation, housing, and local economic development—topics closely tied to the ripple effects of national policy on local economies.
