Dr. Colleen Bielitz, associate vice president for strategic initiatives and outreach at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), recently joined WNHH FM’s “Dateline New Haven” to discuss the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and research. Speaking alongside AI educator and entrepreneur Tom Goldenberg, Bielitz emphasized the importance of integrating AI into academic and workforce training while maintaining the human element in decision-making.
In her conversation with the New Haven Independent, Bielitz highlighted Southern’s new R2 designation as a way to expand research opportunities into ventures such as Project Blue, the university’s Centers of Excellence, and now the emergence of AI.
“AI allows us to learn from nature—what has adapted to extreme heat or cold, what has survived pollution—and apply those insights to solve modern environmental challenges,” said Bielitz.
Before joining Southern, Bielitz had a distinguished career as a senior-level education executive. Her extensive background encompasses operational leadership, launching new program initiatives, fundraising, strategic planning, branding, and marketing at K-12 schools, colleges, and universities across Pennsylvania and New England. Her multifaceted experience has equipped her with a profound understanding of the diverse challenges and opportunities within the educational landscape.
Bielitz also holds a doctorate in education leadership and is a frequently cited expert on critical issues related to sustainability, technology, equity, and the evolving challenges that shape the future of higher education.
