ANDREW GERNHARD, ’99, a successful filmmaker whose credits include more than 100 movies, was honored as the Norwich Native Son for 2024. The award is given annually by the Norwich Rotary Club and the Woman’s City Club to a person who was raised in the Connecticut town and went on to excel professionally.

Gernhard, who majored in communication at Southern, established the Synthetic Cinema International film company in 2004 in Rocky Hill, Conn. As a producer for more than two decades, his catalogue of work ranges from a series of horror films for NBC Universal’s Chiller Network to Christmas movies for the Hallmark Channel.
In recent years, Synthetic Cinema International has created strong working relationships with many prolific executive producers, major studios, and networks such as Paramount, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, SyFy, Shout!Factory, Telemundo, Lifetime, Hallmark, BET, Netflix, Disney+, and more.
