Shelton Author Gary Scarpa, ’74, Releases Third Novel

Southern alumnus Gary Scarpa, ’74, has released his third novel, Still Life. The retired Shelton educator and founder of Shelton’s Center Stage Theater delivers a poignant coming-of-age story set in the early 1970s.

Released in October, the self-published book is inspired by Scarpa’s own life and features familiar Valley and Greater New Haven landmarks such as Shelton High School, Duchess Restaurant, and Southern Connecticut State University, then Southern Connecticut State College.

Scarpa credits his time at Southern, where a chance encounter led him to theater, as a turning point in his life. Now, with three novels under his belt, Scarpa is working on a non-fiction memoir chronicling his 43-year career in theater.
