Southern Connecticut State University School of Business is celebrating a stellar performance in the prestigious Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge 2024. Competing against 2,169 teams from 396 universities across 46 countries, Southern’s team secured an impressive 38th place globally, placing them in the 98th percentile and the top 1.75% of all participants.
The Southern team, led by Captain Graham Riss, ’24, and including Bennett Trombley, ’24; Simon Smith, ’25; and Riley Hays, ’25; adopted a bold strategy focused primarily on cryptocurrency investments. Their innovative approach and analytical skills allowed them to outperform numerous formidable competitors, including all six teams from Columbia University and every participating Ivy League team.
Dr. Jess Boronico, dean of Southern’s School of Business, attributed this success to the school’s recent advancements, particularly the integration of Bloomberg Terminals. These state-of-the-art tools became available following the opening of the School of Business’ new building last year.
“Now that our students have access to proper training and resources on investing, we’re seeing the remarkable results of their dedication and education,” said Boronico. “Finishing 38th out of 2,169 competing teams globally and being in the top 2% is a testament to their hard work, and we couldn’t be prouder.”
The Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge offers university students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the financial industry. Using real-world techniques and tools available on the Bloomberg Terminal, participants develop investment strategies, research high-potential stocks, and gain invaluable experience in trading and portfolio management. The competition not only hones participants’ technical and analytical skills but also enhances their research and presentation abilities while providing opportunities to network with peers and industry professionals.
