Dr. Dwayne Smith Joins NECHE Leadership, Highlights Equity at Annual Meeting

Dr. Dwayne Smith, interim president of Southern Connecticut State University, was elected to the Board of Commissioners of the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) during their annual meeting in Boston this week.

NECHE is a voluntary, peer-based, non-profit membership organization that accredits more than 200 degree-granting post-secondary institutions in New England, across the United States, and internationally. The Commission is dedicated to promoting educational excellence and ensuring quality standards among its member institutions.

The Board of Commissioners comprises at least 27 individuals elected by member colleges and universities. These members include faculty, senior administrators, trustees from member institutions, and representatives of the public interest. Commissioners typically serve no more than two consecutive three-year terms, maintaining diverse and rotating representation.

Additionally, Dr. Smith participated in a panel discussion at the annual meeting, addressing the topic of advancing equity in today’s rapidly changing educational landscape.

With nearly 40 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education as both an administrator and a faculty member, Dr. Smith has consistently championed initiatives that promote access, equity, and academic excellence.

Before arriving at Southern in June 2023, Dr. Smith served as campus CEO of Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Conn., and before coming to Housatonic, he served as interim president of Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, Mo., following his successful 13 years as that institution’s provost.
