Building a Legacy

In a recent interview with Ann Nyberg of WTNH, alumnus Neil Thomas Proto, ’67, shared insights into his upbringing, educational journey, and the motivations behind his philanthropic efforts. As a graduate of Wilbur Cross High School, Southern Connecticut State University, and George Washington University, Proto’s commitment to his alma maters runs deep.

Reflecting on his childhood, Proto spoke about the challenges and aspirations that shaped his early years. Growing up in a working-class family, he understood the value of hard work, determination, and the support of a strong community. These experiences laid the foundation for his belief in the importance of education and civic duty.

Proto’s philanthropy at Southern has been particularly impactful. His generous donations have led to the establishment of several endowments and scholarships aimed at fostering social justice, academic excellence, and civic engagement. Among these are funds supporting aspiring law students, the university’s Pre-Law Society, and an archive for the papers of notable New Haven mayors.
