Using Philosophy To Guide Contemporary Solutions

As a renowned scholar in Aristotelian philosophy and Confucian thought, Dr. Chelsea Harry, professor and assistant chair of philosophy, was thrilled to receive invitations to speak at two prestigious events this summer in China: The Confucius-Aristotle Symposium 2024 and the Nishan Forum 2024.

These gatherings, hosted by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Tsinghua University, the Mencius Foundation, and the Interdisciplinary Center for Aristotle Studies, aimed to explore how ancient philosophies could guide contemporary solutions.

“I am honored to be an invited speaker at these significant forums,” Harry said. “Our collective goal is to retrieve ancient wisdom to address modern challenges.”

Harry’s presentations focused on the synergies between Aristotelian biology and psychology and Confucian principles. She passionately argued that these ancient philosophies, when integrated with other world traditions, could help construct a 21st-century ecology that respects the competing interests of all life forms.

“One of the biggest global challenges we’re facing is anthropogenic climate change,” said Harry. “Confucianism, along with other ancient traditions like those from ancient Greece, provides us with concepts that I believe we can use to address and mitigate this issue.”
