Unlocking Peak Performance: Grand Opening of the CHAMP Center at SCSU

Connecticut’s Morning Buzz host Natasha Lubczenko recently met with Southern’s Dr. Ayanna Walker, associate dean of the College of Health and Human Services, and Dr. William Lunn, professor of health and movement sciences, to discuss the College’s new Health, Athletic, and Mental Performance Center (CHAMP). Walker emphasized the center’s commitment to community wellness, and Lunn highlighted the center’s evidence-based approach, stating, “We use technology that has been demonstrated to be effective. We don’t just fly by the seat of our pants.”

CHAMP celebrated its grand opening on April 24, 2024, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, reception, speaking program, and tours.

Using the latest technology and a team of experts, CHAMP offers a range of services, including precision testing, health assessments, psychological consulting, and performance optimization, and caters not only to athletes but also to non-athletes looking to optimize their health.  Lunn explained, “We have technology like a Dexa Scan, which is effective for bone mineral density. We have the Running Gait Analysis with Motion Capture, we do VO2 Max tests and Lactate Threshold tests for athletes. So, it’s for everybody.”

Walker agreed, emphasizing the importance of testing for everyone. “As we age,” she said, “oftentimes, we’re losing muscle mass, which puts us at risk for falls. Having exercise testing gives us a baseline to recommend changes.”

For those interested in utilizing CHAMP’s services, appointments can be made via email, phone, or through the website. The e-mail address is champ@southernct.edu, and phone is (203) 392-6039.
