Southern Alum on the Move with “Joint Effort”

When Southern alumnus George Norden, ’09, was interning in the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, he noticed a troubling trend. Many older patients would finish with the rehabilitation program, and when they were told to continue exercising on their own they would be left with limited options as to where to go.

Norden, who majored in exercise physiology at Southern, was inspired to open Joint Effort Exercise, a low-impact, guided exercise gym for adults 50 and older.

“Our goal,” Norden said, “is to help people move around more comfortably, more confidently, in their activities of daily living rather than just get stronger.”

Since opening in 2013, Joint Effort has grown to three locations, with another in Niantic slated to open at the end of April. In addition to the new Niantic location, Norden is in the process of preparing documents to franchise the business.
