Southern Connecticut State University has announced the appointment of Dr. Craig D. Hlavac as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1, 2026.
Hlavac has served the college for nearly nine years, first as interim associate dean and then as associate dean, supporting 14 academic departments, three interdisciplinary programs, and the First-Year Experience program. He has worked closely with faculty, staff, students, and campus leaders to advance academic operations and strengthen collaboration across the university.
Throughout his tenure, Hlavac has co-chaired cross-functional committees focused on registration policy and academic operations, led efforts to build a more data-informed culture, and developed training programs to support department chairs. He has also expanded experiential learning opportunities through partnerships with regional arts organizations and played a key role in securing more than $5 million in philanthropic support for academic programs.
“With deep institutional knowledge and a strong commitment to shared governance and student success, I am confident that Dr. Hlavac will provide steady leadership for the College during this transition,” said Dr. Julia Irwin, interim provost and VP for academic affairs.
