Dr. Shay Taylor-Allen, ’17, is living a full-circle moment that’s now gaining national attention.

A New Haven native, Taylor-Allen got her start in healthcare as a janitor at Yale New Haven Hospital before enrolling at Southern to study biology — all while caring for her mother and navigating challenges in the healthcare system. That experience pushed her to pursue medicine and become the kind of doctor her family needed.

Taylor-Allen will graduate from Howard University College of Medicine in May, and she recently learned she had matched for residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. She is now preparing to return to Yale New Haven as a physician, with her story being featured across major outlets and national television.
