Academy Award Winner Spike Lee to Deliver Distinguished Lecture at Southern Connecticut State University

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Academy Award-winning film director, producer, writer, and actor Spike Lee will present “That’s My Story & I’m Sticking to It: An Evening with Spike Lee” at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Southern Connecticut State University’s Lyman Center.

Lee will deliver remarks at the 2022 Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished Lecture, followed by a moderated discussion.

Since his first film in 1986, “She’s Gotta Have It,” Lee has become known for films that are outspoken and provocative socio-political critiques that challenge cultural assumptions about race, class, urban violence, and gender identity. Most recently, he directed and co-wrote Da 5 Bloods for Netflix. Prior to “Da 5 Bloods.” Lee co-wrote and directed the Academy Award-nominated and critically acclaimed hit film, BlacKkKlansman, winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Lee’s career spans over 30 years and includes: She’s Gotta Have It, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers, Girl 6, Get on the Bus, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, Bamboozled, 25th Hour, She Hate Me, Inside Man, Miracle at St. Anna, Red Hook Summer, Old Boy, and Chi-Raq.

Lee has won numerous awards for his work, including Academy Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards, and Cannes Film Festival Awards. Since 2002, he has been the artistic director of the graduate film program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he received his Master of Fine Arts in film production and has taught for the past 15 years. Lee’s production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks is based in Brooklyn, New York.

A portion of the proceeds supports Southern’s Endowed Awards of Excellence, a merit-based scholarship program.
